PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion having high dispersion stability dispersing a water-insoluble colorant such as pigments as fine particles of nanometer sizes having a fine and uniform particle diameter, to provide a method for producing the dispersion which improves co-dissolvability of a solution such as the water-insoluble colorant and a polymer compound which are used as a material and which produces the dispersion of the fine particle of water-insoluble colorant efficiently and in high purity, to provide a base used therefor, and to provide a recording liquid, an ink set, a printed article, a method for forming image and an image forming apparatus using the same.

SOLUTION: The dispersion containing fine particles of the water-insoluble colorant, which is dispersed the fine particles of the water-insoluble colorant into a medium containing water together with the polymer compound having an acid group as a hydrophilic site or a surfactant having an acid group as a hydrophilic site, includes base having two or more quaternary ammonium hydroxide sites in a molecule, or base having these sites in water.
