PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder capable of attaining exact measurement of an eccentricity amount and shortening of measurement time. SOLUTION: With a connection portion 3 connected to a rotating shaft of a measurement object in the center, the rotary encoder is provided with: a rotary disc 1 having a scale 2 formed on the peripheral edge; light projection means of irradiating the rotary disc with light; optical detection means of detecting transmitted light or reflected light through a scale; and rotation detection means of detecting a rotating state of the rotary disc based on a detection result of the optical detection means. The rotating disc includes a circular pattern 4 concentric to the scale, and three or more straight patterns 5 crossing or contacting the circular pattern and the connection portion.
