[Also in Division D1] Compounds of the formula wherein each group R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a C 1-7 alkyl group, each group R<SP>11</SP> is a C 1-7 alkyl group and R is an organic radical, may be obtained (i) by reacting a compound of the formula with a compound of the formula or (ii) by reacting a compound of the formula with a compound of formula both processes being effected under anhydrous conditions, and treating the intermediate biquaternary ammonium salts produced with aqueous alkaline solutions, wherein the radicals X, X 1 and X 2 are halogens, monovalent sulphonic derivatives of the formula -OSO 2 O-alkyl or monovalent phosphoric derivatives of the formula -OPO(Oalkyl) 2 . The organic radical R may be selected from the following radicals: (a) -Y-O-Y- in which Y is an alkylene radical, (b) -CH 2 O-Y<SP>1</SP>-OCH 2 - in which Y<SP>1</SP> is a polyalkylene ether or alkylene radical, (c) a radical of the formula or (d) -CH 2 -CH=CH-A-CH=CH-CH 2 in which A is a bivalent organic radical. Specific examples of compounds of the invention which are described are those wherein (i) R<SP>1</SP>=H, R<SP>11</SP>=ethyl, R=-CH 2 O(CH 2 ) 2 -OCH 2 -, and (ii) R<SP>1</SP>=H, R<SP>11</SP>=ethyl and R= -CH 2 -OCH 2 -. |
