PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold clamping apparatus which can reduce the flow rate of a hydraulic liquid to be supplied to a mold clamping cylinder. SOLUTION: A piston 8 stowed in the mold clamping cylinder 9 has a large-diameter piston section 70 which divides a large-diameter cylinder chamber 67 into a first cylinder chamber 67a and a second cylinder chamber 67b, and a small-diameter piston section 71 which can slide in a small-diameter cylinder chamber 68. The end 7c of a tie bar blocks the opening 68c of the small-diameter cylinder chamber 68. A hydraulic circuit 76 is designed so as to connect or disconnect the first cylinder chamber 67a and second cylinder chamber 67b, connect or disconnect the first cylinder chamber 67a and small-diameter cylinder chamber 68, change over the supply destination of the hydraulic liquid from the hydraulic pressure source between the first cylinder chamber 67a and small-diameter cylinder chamber 68, and allow or disallow the discharge of the hydraulic liquid from the second cylinder chamber 67b and small-diameter cylinder chamber 68 to a tank 86.
