<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a shift operation device by making an arm shifter engage with a shift member in the outermost row at an intermediate part between a rotating shaft and an end part. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The shift operation device of a transmission includes a plurality of the shift members 111a, 112a, 103a, 114a, which complete a gear train of a gear shift corresponding to each member by moving in the axial direction of the transmission, and an arm shifter 120, which performs a select operation that selectively engages with one of a plurality of shift members by rocking around the rotating shaft 121 almost in parallel to the axial direction and performs a shift action of moving the engaged shift member in the axial direction. The arm shifter is structured to engage with shift members other than the shift member 114a in the outermost row arranged in the outermost row of a plurality of the shift members at its end part 123 and engages with the shift member in the outermost row at the intermediate part 124 between the rotating shaft and the end part.
