<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To asynchronously display two different display signals without using a frame memory and to control superposition of two images on horizontal lines. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A plurality of horizontal display control lines CTL are arranged in parallel with signal lines D and connected to respective switching elements ctl of pixels. Out of pixels in which the switching elements sw are turned on by selection voltages from gate lines G, a pixel which does not rewrite a display signal turns off the switching element ct1 and does not apply a display signal to a liquid crystal cell, and a pixel which rewrites the display signal turns on the switching element ct1 by applying a rewrite selection signal by a horizontal display control circuit 109, wherein the display signal output from a signal circuit and corresponding to the pixel is applied to the liquid crystal cell to rewrite the display signal.
