The device has a distance detection device (3) for detection of a distance between a vehicle and an ahead-driving vehicle. A vehicle speed control device controls the distance between the vehicle and the ahead-driving vehicle through adjustment of speed of the vehicle based on the detected distance, so that a reference distance to the ahead-driving vehicle is maintained. An evaluation unit (2) detects signals and/or interferences of a distance control device (1). The evaluation unit selects or switches-on or switches-off components in dependence of determined traffic conditions. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a motor vehicle.
