[Also in Division G2] A system for illuminating an object and projecting the image thereof to an image plane, comprises two reflectors which are portions of right hollow elliptical cylinders of different ellipticity placed with their concave sides facing so as to share a single pair of line foci F1, F2, and an elongated light source placed at F1 to illuminate the object placed at F2, the edges of the reflectors remote from F2 being spaced apart to define an opening through which only reflected light from the object may pass. As shown in Fig. 2, a tubular member 64 of rectangular cross-section closed at the rear end 74 by a transparent sheet 72, may be fixed to the opening 72 formed by the reflectors 12, 14 leaving an opening 70 into which cooling gas may be blown, which passes out of holes 72 drilled through the reflector 14. The reflectors 12, 14 may be of stainless steel, aluminium or iron and the reflective surfaces 16, 18 may be coated with e.g. aluminium. |
