The pretensioner (10) has a gripping device (16) that is directly attached to a belt strap and loaded with a retraction force that is aligned opposite to a moving direction of the belt strap. A transmission unit (18) connects the gripping device with a drive unit (14) that provides rotational movement. The transmission unit converts the rotational movement of the drive unit into a linear movement of the gripping device. The drive unit has an energy storage that is connected with the transmission unit.
