A process is described of recovering carbon black from a rubber materialcontaining carbon black , e.g. used tyres. The process comprises:
granulating the rubber so that at least 80% (by weight) of the granules have a maximum dimension of less than or equal to 7 mm and a minimum dimension of greater than or equal to 2mm;
subjecting the granules to microwave radiation at a power and for a duration sufficient to substantially complete devulcanisation of the rubber,
controlling the devulcanisation process so that it is conducted at a temperature in the range of 250°C to 800°C, e.g. 300°C - 700°C, such as 400°C-600°C, and
recovering the solid residue remaining, which comprises carbon black.
|
