In a gear transmission, such as in particular a mechanical gearbox for a motor vehicle, a shaft (10 is supported rotatably at one of its ends on a casing (12) of the transmission by means of a first support (14). An idler gear (22) is arranged coaxially at the end of the shaft (10) and is supported by means of a second support (24) in such a way that it rotates with respect to the shaft (10) about the axis of the latter. The first and second supports (14, 24) are arranged so as to be at least partially interpenetrating or overlapping axially on an annular support portion (12a) formed by the casing (12) and extending towards the interior of the transmission (12).
