It is described a method for routing data packets in a LAN. The LAN comprises a network element (NE3') and further network elements. The network element supports a first network layer protocol (CLWP;IP). The method comprises a step of electing one network element (NE2') as a pseudo-node. The pseudo-node is considered adjacent to said network element (NE3'). The method comprises, at said network element (NE3'):
- receiving first packets formatted according to said first protocol;
- running a first shortest path algorithm for obtaining a first shortest path, said first shortest path algorithm being based on information (ALPW',PS1,PSN2,PS4,PS5) which are related to said pseudo-node and to said further network elements, said information comprising information about adjacency (ALPN') of said pseudo-node and information about network layer protocol(s) supported by said further network elements; and
- routing said received first packets to a network element (NE5';NE4') belonging to said first shortest path and placed immediately downstream of said pseudo-node.
