Novolaks and particularly <FORM:0922449/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0922449/IV(a)/2> <FORM:0922449/IV(a)/3> are reacted to replace the phenolic hydroxyl groups with radicals of the general formula -O-(R-O-)xCO-R1(COOMe)y and if desired partially by a radical of general formula -O-(R-O-)xH and/or -O-(R-O-)x-COR11 where R stands for aliphatic C2-C5 or phenyl substituted derivative thereof, R1 and R11 are aliphatic or aromatic radicals x is an integer from 1 to 10, y is one or two and Me is an alkali metal, ammonium or an amine cation. Many examples of such radicals are given. Particular preparations of novolak compositions are exemplified in Examples 1-3.ALSO:Polyhydric phenols and polyphenols have the phenolic hydroxyl groups replaced by a radical -O-(R-O-)xCO-R1(-COOMe)u and if desired, partially by a radical -O-(R-O-)xH and/or -O-(R-O-)x CO-R11 where R stands for an aliphatic radical preferably containing 2-5 carbon atoms or a phenyl-substituted derivative thereof, R1 and R11 are aliphatic or aromatic radicals, x is an integer from 1 to 10, y is 1 or 2 and Me is alkali metal, ammonium or an amine cation. The products may be obtained by hydroxyalkylating phenols and then esterifying with di- or poly-carboxylic acids or partly with such acids and partly with mono-carboxylic acids. |
