A biodegradable polymer cork is synthesised using a composition primarily comprising biodegradable polyester, and also comprising polyisobutylene and a raising agent. The components are first thoroughly mixed, for example using a twin screw extruder, to form pellets, and the pellets are then subjected to a moulding process such as an injection moulding process to form the polymer corks. The moulding step may be carried out at a higher temperature than the extrusion, so that the raising agent acts only during the moulding step. The resulting corks are biodegradable, and more resilient than natural corks. |
