PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for transmitting and receiving channel quality indicator in a wideband wireless communication are provided to minimize the overhead caused by a CQI feedback by transmitting the minimized reference CQI information through a reference CQI and a differential CQI through a CQI channel or a rapid feedback channel in a robust coding procedure. CONSTITUTION: An MS(Mobile Station) transmits a C2 signal to a BS(Base Station) for confirming the transmission of a broadband CQI(Channel Quality Information). The terminal transmits a broadband CQI or reference CQI to the BS through a CQI channel or a rapid feedback channel(106). The base station allocates band AMC(Adaptive Modulation and Coding) sub-channel(107), and transmits the differential CQI to the BS(108,110). The terminal transmits the C3 to the BS for the transition from an AMC sub-channel mode to a general parent channel mode(112).
