2,4 - Diamino - 5 - (2,4,5 - trimethoxy-benzyl)-pyrimidine is prepared as follows: (a) acetylthymine, N - bromosuccinimide and benzoyl peroxide react to give acetylbromothymine (1 - acetyl - 2,4 - diketo - 5 - bromomethyl - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydro - pyrimidine), (b) acetylbromothymine, mercuric chloride and 1,3,4-trimethoxy-benzene react exothermically with the formation of a mercuric chloride complex which is decomposed to 5-(2,4,5-trimethoxy - benzyl) - uracil; (c) 5 - (2,4,5 - trimethoxy-benzyl)-uracil and phosphorus oxy-chloride react in the presence of N,N-dimethyl aniline to give 2,4-dichloro-5-(2,4,5-trimethoxy-benzyl)-pyrimidin which when autoclaved with methanolic ammonia gives the product. Similarly, when in step (b) 1,3,4-trimethoxy-benzene is replaced by 3,4-dimethoxy-toluene, 5 - (4,5 - dimethoxy - 2 - methyl - benzyl)-uracil, 2,4 - dichloro - 5 - (4,5 - dimethoxy - 2-methyl - benzyl) - pyrimidine and finally 2,4 - diamino - 5 - (4,5 - dimethoxy - 2 - methyl - benzyl) - pyrimidine are obtained. Also 5 - (2 - ethyl - 4,5 - dimethoxy - benzyl)-uracil, 2,4 - dichloro - 5 - (2 - ethyl - 4,5 - dimethoxy - benzyl) - pyrimidine and finally 2,4 - diamino - 5 - (2 - ethyl - 4,5 - dimethoxy-benzyl) - pyrimidine are obtained when the 1,3,4-trimethoxy-benzene of step (b) is replaced by 1-ethyl-3,4-dimethoxy-benzene.ALSO:A veterinary preparation useful for the treatment of coccidiosis in poultry comprises a mixture of (a) sulphaclimethoxine, sulphaquinoxaline or sulphamethoxazole and (b) a pyrimidine compound of formula wherein R is a methoxy, methyl or ethyl group, or an acid addition salt thereof with a physiologically acceptable acid. Generally from 0.01 to 20 parts by weight of (b) is present per part by weight of (a). The preparations are administered to poultry by incorporating them in solid feedstuffs, drinking water or any other ingestible liquid to provide 0.005 to 0.1 % by wt. of (a) and 0.001 to 0.1 % by wt. of (b).
