An apparatus for forming a rod-shaped package of plexifilamentary strand material of the type described in Specification 891,943 comprises a spinneret having an orifice for flash spinning the strand material and collecting means for receiving the material characterized in that the collecting means comprises a tubular conduit in contact with and extending away from the spinneret face to define an elongated passageway into which the strand material is discharged under pressure from the orifice, and means for maintaining the pressure within the passageway at a level between the spinning pressure and atmospheric pressure. The pressure control means may comprise a series of perforations in the conduit in the vicinity of the end adjacent the spinneret face. The tubular conduit may taper in cross-section, the diameter at the end remote from the spinneret being less than the diameter of the conduit adjacent to the orifice, and, if desired, means being provided for adjusting the taper. |
