Filaments consist of a copolymer of vinylidene cyanide and vinyl acetate or of a blend of such a copolymer with polyacrylonitrile, with polyvinylpyrrolidone, with a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate or with a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methylvinylpyridine. The filaments may be made by dissolving the polymer or polymer blend in N,N1-dimethylacetamide, N,N1-dimethylformamide, acetonitrile or dimethylsulphoxide, and wet-spinning the solution into a coagulating bath consisting essentially of hot polyalkylene glycol of molecular weight 200-6000, withdrawing the filaments thereby formed from the coagulating bath and stretching the filaments in a second bath consisting essentially of hot polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight of 200-6000, washing the filaments, applying a finish to them and drying them.
