PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tissue characterization discriminating method, program and device for more precise tissue characterization (for instance, fibrous tissue, lipid tissue) in image data( specially, ultrasonic image data in a blood vessel). SOLUTION: The tissue characterization method (program, device) for the tissue characterization of a marked point from local image information (ultrasonic RF signal) of a part in the vicinity of the marked point of the image data (ultrasonic image) includes a coefficient calculating step (step 55) for resolving the local image information (ultrasonic RF signal) in the vicinity of the marked point by a group of basic functions for the tissue characterizations respectively previously obtained by learnings (steps 51, 52, 53, 54) by a sparse coding method to calculate coefficients for the basic functions respectively and a tissue characterization step (step 56) for the tissue characterization of the marked point in accordance with the coefficients respectively for the basic functions calculated in the coefficient calculating step.
