<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To complete the balancing of a plurality of battery cells without fail. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This is a method of controlling the battery of an automobile, which executes the balancing for roughly equalizing each state of charge of a plurality of battery cells constituting a battery for an automobile by controlling a discharge means installed in each battery cell. A discharge means discharges a battery cell, operating only while it receives power supply from an accumulation means provided in each of them. The each battery cell state of charge is detected, and the degree of the dispersion of the state of charge among the plurality of battery cells is determined, and when it is determined that the dispersion of the state of charge is large, a discharge amount E<SB>DC</SB>(n) of each battery cell for making the state of charge the equal state of charge SOC<SB>G</SB>is computed, and an operating time T<SB>DC</SB>(n) of a first discharge means of each battery cell required to the discharge amount E<SB>DC</SB>(n) is computed, and operating power P(n) for operating the first discharge means of each battery cell only for the T<SB>DC</SB>(n) is computed, and the accumulating means of the discharge means is charged with electricity so as to accumulate P(n).
