<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device can accurately detect the floating of a recording medium held by a conveying mechanism, and to provide a method of detecting the floating of the recording medium applied to the image forming device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This image forming device includes: a conveying means (126c) for conveying the recording medium (114); a recording head for forming an image on the recording medium (114) conveyed by the conveying means (126c); a light emitting means (512) for emitting an inspection light passing through the full width range of the recording medium (114) in the lateral direction of the recording medium (114) further on the upstream side than the recording head in the direction in which the recording medium (114) is conveyed by the conveying means (126c); and a light receiving means (514) installed on the opposite side of the light emitting means (512) with the recording medium (114) interposed therebetween for receiving the detection light emitted from the light emitting means (512) and outputting a signal according to the received amount of light. A slit for restricting the passing range of the detection light is formed in at least one of the light emitting means (512) and the light receiving means (514) so as to extend in the conveying direction.
