<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus with a ribbon mask in which a recording medium can be surely prevented from being caught with the ribbon mask during recording without limitation on the shape of each part including the ribbon mask. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The printer 10 includes the ribbon mask 46 which is disposed between the ink ribbon 40 arranged in front of a recording head 18 and a cut sheet 100, and has an opening allowing the ink ribbon 40 to be exported at the cut sheet 100 side. The printer prints an image on the cut sheet 100 for each line. In printing the image constituting one line, the printer selects operation for printing between a normal printing operation for printing the entire image by scanning one direction with a carriage 19, and a division printing operation for printing in such a manner that the ribbon mask 46 does not ride on the side edge of the cut sheet 100 by dividing the image into a plurality of regions for allowing the carriage 19 to scan each region.
