<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for magnetic recording capable of minimizing the effect of side erasure while maintaining satisfactory read/write characteristics to achieve high-density recording in a vertical magnetic recording scheme. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording apparatus includes a recording current generating circuit which generates a recording current for recording a recording data pattern to a vertical magnetic recording medium using a recording head, and a setting circuit which sets a recording current value or an overshoot current value of the recording current. The setting circuit sets the recording current value or the overshoot current value to be smaller as the obtained degree of the effect of side erasure increases, depending on the recording data pattern, and the effect of side erasure on a track adjacent to a recording track.
