<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce electric power consumed to irradiate an optical write type display medium with light when the display medium is initialized. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A recording device which irradiates electronic paper 200 as the optical write type display medium with light uses external light 300 as the light emitted when an image recorded on the electronic paper 200 is initialized. The external light 300 is taken into a space 102b in a housing 102 when a shutter 120e is controlled into an open state, and then guided into an irradiation area by a light guide plate 120a to irradiate the recording surface 200b of the electronic paper 200.
