<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for processing images, outputting images excellent in not only robustness to density variation but also robustness to a granular feeling even when uniformity and smoothness are considered as important. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When distributing multi-valued image data to a plurality of planes corresponding to each of a plurality of recording element columns or a plurality of record scans, recording amount information obtained by accumulating the quantized recording information of the plane to which the multi-valued image data has been already distributed is utilized. Each time the quantization processing of the image data of one plane is performed, the quantized image data is subjected to resolution conversion to a lower resolution and is accumulated to existing recording amount information and updated and stored. Since conversion to the lower resolution is performed by the resolution conversion processing, the data amount of the recording amount information is reduced, a memory band and a transfer band in arithmetic processing are suppressed even while securing sufficient robustness, and quick and smooth image processing is performed.
