The method involves heating washing water accommodated in a washing tub (40) of a washing machine (1), where the heating of the washing water in the washing tub takes place by using heat. The heat is produced by a heat production unit provided in the washing tub. Steam is supplied to the washing tub, where the time period during which the heating of the washing water is executed overlaps partially with the time period during which the supply of steam is executed. The heating of the washing water is executed during supplying of the steam. An independent claim is also included for a washing machine comprising a steam supply unit.
