<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color filter substrate including an optical retardation compensation layer, in which in order that an optical retardation layer has a desired optical retardation value, a level difference of a color filter layer is eliminated and a leveling layer is made to satisfy alignment, transparency, and flatness with a single layer, the leveling layer leveling an entire black matrix by filling an aperture part of a black matrix layer. <P>SOLUTION: In the color filter substrate including the optical retardation compensation layer, the black matrix layer, the color filter layer, the leveling layer, and the optical retardation compensation layer are laminated in this order on a glass substrate, or the black matrix layer, the leveling layer, the optical retardation compensation layer, and the color filter layer are laminated in this order on the glass substrate.
