<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide-angle zoom lens system that has a half field angle of 40° or more at the short focal distance end, the lens system being sufficiently small and thin (reduced in accommodating length). Ž<P>SOLUTION: The wide-angle zoom lens system includes, in order from an object side, a first lens group with negative refractive power, a second lens group with positive refractive power, and a third lens group with positive refractive power. In zooming from the short focal distance end to the long focal distance end, they move so that the spacing between the first and the second lens groups may decrease and the spacing between the second and the third lens groups may increase. The wide-angle zoom lens system satisfies conditional expression (1).
