<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromechanical element, particularly a stator assembly, that reduces the cost of a mechanical device without deteriorating performance. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The stator assembly for an electrical machine includes a core made of a magnetic material. The core has an annular yoke 2 and a plurality of teeth 3 spaced in the circumferential direction on the annular yoke and extended in the radial direction therefrom. The teeth are so spaced in the circumferential direction as to define winding slots 6. A stator winding is supported by a stator core and has coil turns around the teeth in the winding slots. Each tooth and a radial-direction connecting portion 4 of the yoke have varying axial dimensions and magnetic flux may be adjusted to an optimal flux density in each section of the magnetic flux path in the stator.
