<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive surge counter having a small installation space and consuming less power in recording the magnitudes of surge currents and the number of times of the occurrence of surge currents. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The surge counter records the magnitudes of surge currents and the number of times of the occurrence of surge currents on a recording sheet 2 by operating an electromagnet 31 using output currents due to surges occurring in a target line 1, thus there is no need of providing an external power supply for operating a recording section 30. Furthermore, since the recording sheet 2 is fed by utilizing the return motion of the electromagnet 31, there is no need of providing an external power supply for operating a paper feed section 50. Thus, it is possible to provide a surge counter capable of reducing the power consumption in recording the occurrence of surges to zero or to a very small value. Moreover, since the recording operation of surges and the paper feed operation are performed with merely the operation of the electromagnet 31 as the power source, a compact and inexpensive surge counter having a very simple structure can be provided.
