The invention comprises cationic polymers comprising diphenyl ether moieties linked by methylene groups and having substituents -CH2Z bonded to the aromatic nuclei, Z being a cationic group which is an amino, ammonium, quaternary ammonium, sulphonium or phosphonium group. The polymers are prepared by reacting ammonia, amines, organic sulphides or tertiary dialkylaminophosphines with polymers comprising diphenyl ether moieties linked by methylene groups and substituted by halomethyl groups (such polymers being obtained by condensation of halomethylated diphenyl oxide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to give a polymer having residual halomethyl groups). There may be 0.05 or more, e.g. up to two, -CH2Z groups per diphenyl ether moiety. In examples, polymers are obtained from chloromethylated diphenyl ether, and the residual chloromethyl groups in the polymers are reacted with trimethylamine, tri-n-propylamine, tri-n-butylamine, dimethyl aminoethanol, 2-amino-ethanol, pyridine, N,N-dimethylaniline, dimethylaodecylamine, hexamethylene tetramine, dimethylamine, ethylenediamine, thiodiglycol, dimethyl-sulphide and monomethylamine.ALSO:To improve the wet and dry strength of paper and to increase the electroconductivity of paper for use in electrographic printing, there is incorporated in paper a soluble, cationic polymer comprising diphenyl ether moieties linked with methylene bridges and having substituents -CH2Z bonded to the aromatic nuclei, Z being a cationic group which is an amino, ammonium, quaternary ammonium or sulphonium group. The polymer contains an average of at least 0.05 cationic groups Z per diphenyl ether moiety. From 0.05 to 10 per cent by weight of the polymer may be incorporated in the paper. The polymer may be incorporated as an aqueous solution either during the manufacture of the paper or preformed paper may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of the polymer. Examples are given.ALSO:To improve the wet and dry strength of paper and to increase the electroconductivity of paper for use in electrographic printing, paper is impregnated or coated with a soluble, cationic polymer comprising diphenyl ether moieties linked with methylene bridges and having substituents -CH2Z bonded to the aromatic nuclei, Z being a cationic group which is an amino, ammonium, quaternary ammonium or sulphonium group. The polymer contains an average of at least 0.05 cationic groups Z per diphenyl ether moiety. From 0.05 to 10 per cent by weight of the polymer may be incorporated in or coated on the paper. The paper may be impregnated or coated with an aqueous solution of the polymer and dried. In Examples paper is coated with polymers according to the process of the invention, in some instances the reverse sides of the paper are coated with a photoconductive coating of zinc oxide in a styrene-butadiene latex binder.
