The engine (1) has two groups of cylinders (2, 4) e.g. combustion cylinders (2a, 2b) and expansion cylinder (4a), and pistons movable in the cylinders. Combustion of fuel and partial expansion of pressurized combustion gases take place in one of the groups of cylinders in a four-stroke process. Additional expansion of the gases takes place in the other group of cylinders in a two-stroke process, where a stroke of one of the pistons is changeable in the cylinders of the latter group. The number of cylinders of the latter group is larger than the number of cylinders of the former group. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal-combustion engine.
