PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus detecting a phase difference between phases in an image exposure position and in an image transfer position, of periodical rotational fluctuation in the rotational direction of an image carrier. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the rotationally driven image carrier; an image exposure means exposing an image on the image carrier; a developing means developing an electrostatic latent image formed on the image carrier by image exposure of the image exposure means with toner; a transfer means transferring a toner image developed on the image carrier by the developing means onto a recording medium or an intermediate transfer body; and a phase difference detection means detecting the phase difference between the phases in the image exposure position and in the image transfer position, of the periodical image displacement in the rotational direction of the image carrier.
