The method involves determining a distance of an object (O) based on a vertical camera image position (d1') of the object and a road surface model. A camera image breadth (b1') of the object is determined, and a filtered breadth of the object is determined based on the distance, image breadth and focal distance of an eyepiece of the video assistance system. Another distance of the object is determined based on the filtered breadth, image breadth and the focal distance of a monocular video assistance system. An independent claim is also included for a device for distance determination with a monocular video assistance system for a motor vehicle.
