The method involves measuring length and depth of a parking lot (P). A position of an obstacle (H) is detected using sensor devices e.g. ultrasonic distance sensors (2, 3), during a parking process (V) of a vehicle (1) in the parking lot by measuring distance of the obstacle to the vehicle. Height of the obstacle is determined by the sensor devices. A determination is made whether the obstacle projects in an opening path of vehicle doors (4-7) using an evaluation device. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting threatening collision with an obstacle during opening of a door of a parked vehicle.
