PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus enabling improved accuracy in the detection of a coloring agent remaining on an image carrier. SOLUTION: Residual toner on a belt 13 cleaned by a cleaner 16 is detected under the condition that the toner detection is easy to carry out compared to the case where a pattern sensor 15 detects a pattern P1. This improves detection accuracy compared to the case where the residual toner detection is carried out in the same condition as in the case where the pattern sensor 15 detects the pattern P1 in a simple way.
