<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a dicyano compound which is safe without using a poison and is easy to industrially carry out under mild conditions. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The process for producing a dicyano compound represented by formula (II) (wherein R is a 3-5C aliphatic hydrocarbon group) comprises reacting chloroacetonitrile with triphenylphosphine in the presence of a solvent to obtain a phosphonium salt, reacting the obtained phosphonium salt with a base in the presence of a solvent, and successively reacting the product with an alkanoyl cyanide represented by formula (I) (wherein R is the same as defined above).
