<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and image forming system preventing unwanted confusion caused by no operation when the image forming apparatus is shifted to a power saving mode in a situation where there is nobody around the apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image forming section for carrying out image formation on the basis of image data stored in an image data storage section. The image forming apparatus further includes: a photodetection section that outputs a photodetection signal on the basis of detected ambient light; and a control section which, when receiving an image forming instruction while an operational mode is a power saving mode, determines ambient illuminance on the basis of the photodetection signal input from the photodetection section, when the ambient illuminance is less than a predetermined threshold, stores image data into the image data storage section and when the ambient illuminance becomes equal to or higher than the predetermined threshold thereafter, causes the image forming section to perform image formation on the basis of the image data stored in the image data storage section.
