Stabilized liquid alkaline detergent compositions comprise water, an inorganic alkali metal salt and a detergent, the detergent being anionic or non-ionic or constituting a mixture thereof forming a separate liquid phase, the compositions containing 0.1% to 5.0% by weight of a water-soluble partial ester derived from an hydroxyl containing micelle-forming non-ionic or anionic surface active agent and an alkali-soluble interpolymer of an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the watersoluble partial ester containing not more than 5 mole per cent of the carbonyl groups present as ester groups. Many unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides are specified, maleic anhydride being preferred. The ethylenically unsaturated monomers include ethylene, methyl vinyl ether and styrene. The surface active agents used to prepare the water-soluble partial ester include alkyl-phenol-ethylene oxide and aliphatic alcohol ethylene-oxide condensates. Alkali metal salts used include meta-, pyro- and polyphosphates which may be used in admixture with or replaced by alkali metal silicates, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulphates, borates and hydroxides. Other constituents referred to are optical brighteners, foam stabilizers, defoaming agents, soil suspending agents, colouring materials, perfumes and corrosion inhibitors.
