PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the impact of back-EMF of a motor by an appropriate method. SOLUTION: A printer is equipped with a voltage control section 20 for controlling the supply voltage to a motor which provides power to a carriage, wherein the voltage control section 20 has a voltage rise detection section 104 which detects that the voltage at a node 110 between motor power supplies rises above the output voltage from a constant voltage power supply 22, a switch 108 which feeds a current when the voltage rise detection section 104 detects that the voltage at a node 110 between motor power supplies rises above the output voltage from a constant voltage power supply 22, and a current consumption section 106 which consumes the current when the switch 108 feeds a current, the voltage rise detection section 104 has a capacitor C2 which receives the voltage at a node 110 between motor power supplies at one terminal thereof, and a comparator U1A which detects variation in voltage at the other terminal of the capacitor C2, and the switch 108 is opened/closed according to the output from the comparator U1A.
