<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp and a back light device having high efficiency and a long serve life, by eliminating the problem caused by sputtering of an electrode member and a lead wire. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The discharge lamp 10 has a hollow insulating member 8 for substantially surrounding part of the lead wire 6 extending to an inside space of a glass bulb 1. The hollow insulating member 8 is installed by contact with the electrode member 4 without substantially interposing a clearance, and extends at predetermined intervals between the lead wire 6 and itself. In one embodiment of this invention, the hollow insulating member 8 may extend from the end vicinity on the lead wire 6 side of the electrode member 4. The hollow insulating member 8 may also have a protrusion projecting toward an inner surface of the glass bulb 1.
