<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing acicular calcium carbonate excellent in glossiness and opacity under easy and relatively wide synthesis conditions without requiring any complicated synthesis condition or operation in the production of acicular calcium carbonate. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method for producing acicular light calcium carbonate by reacting calcium hydroxide with carbon dioxide in the presence of seed crystals, a suspension containing, as a principal component, calcium hydroxide obtained by slaking quicklime having reactivity in a range of 100-300 mL is preliminarily added with 0.5-10 pts.mass of calcium carbonate seed crystals and 0.5-10 pts.mass of a sulfuric acid compound, based on 100 pts.mass of the calcium hydroxide, and a carbonation reaction is conducted under stirring to obtain acicular calcium carbonate having an average particle diameter of primary particles of 0.5-3.0 μm with respect to major axis and 0.1-0.5 μm with respect to minor axis and a standard deviation in minor axis of ≤0.1 μm.
