<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve large magnification zooming operation using optical zooming and electronic zooming, and to prevent degradation in image quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus includes: an imaging means 2 for photoelectrically converting object light; an optical zoom means 8 for performing optical magnification variation in response to a zooming operation by a photographer; an electronic zoom means 4 for performing electronic magnification variation on output signals from the imaging means; and a control means 7 for operating the electronic zoom means together with the optical zoom means in a first zoom range in response to the zooming operation, operating the optical zoom means without operating the electronic zoom means in response to the zooming operation in a second zoom range, which is closer to a telephoto side than the first zoom range, and operating the electronic zoom means together with the optical zoom means in response to the zooming operation in a third zoom range, which is closer to the telephoto side than the second zoom range further.
