Disclosed is a sound absorbing material that is lightweight and possesses excellent sound absorbing properties. A paper formed of pulp fibers having a beating degree of 350 to 650 ml (CSF) in terms of Canadian standard freeness as measured in a Canadian standard freeness testing method specified in 4. in JIS P 8121-1995 and/or 15° SR to 30° SR in terms of Schopper-Riegler freeness as measured in a Schopper-Riegler freeness testing method specified in 5. in JIS P 8121-1995 is used as a sound absorbing material. In the paper, the pulp fibers of 350 to 650 ml (CSF) and/or 15° SR to 30° SR are porous and can impart excellent sound absorbing properties to the paper.
