PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection apparatus and a camera system capable of performing processing relating to the detection of a focusing state even in the case that an image signal transmission rate exceeds the processing speed of a filter. SOLUTION: An SRAM 11 outputs an image signal input at a first transmission rate relating to a subject image formed in a partial area on the light-receiving plane of an imaging device via an imaging lens after converting the transmission rate of the image signal into a second transmission rate lower than the first transmission rate. An HPF 12 extracts a frequency component from the image signal output at the second transmission rate from the SRAM 11. An integrator 13 calculates an evaluation value for the focusing state of the imaging lens on the basis of a signal constituted of the frequency component extracted by the HPF 12.
