<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which is downsized and can simultaneously read images on the front and rear sides of a document, without causing degradation of the image quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 includes: CIS sensor heads 2, 3, disposed respectively so as to oppose the front and rear sides of a document fed along a feed path 19, comprising light sources 21, 31 of three colors with different wavelengths and line sensors 240, 340 of three systems, corresponding to the respective wavelengths; and a read control section 4 for switching and lighting the light sources 21, 31, in a predetermined order, and extracting outputs from the line sensors 240, 340 in accordance with the wavelengths. The respective CIS sensor heads 2, 3 are disposed nearer to each other along a document feeding direction, and the read control section 4 is configured so that the light sources of the same color of the CIS sensor heads 2, 3 are switched and turned on with different timings.
