<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely express an area on paper when displaying encoded information on the paper as optical information. <P>SOLUTION: A square code in which encoded information is arranged along a polygonal circumference includes a pattern of a narrow protruding part 4a and a broad protruding part 4b, which is disposed along the polygonal circumference and expresses the encoded information; and an area S for displaying optional information, which is surrounded by the pattern.
