<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for easily and securely registering a cipher key for enciphering image data in both of an image reader and a terminal device. <P>SOLUTION: In an image read system, a PC receives a password input by a user (S160), and sends an encrypted cipher key, where an image cipher key for encrypting image data generated by a scanner is encrypted by the input password, to the scanner (S180). The scanner stores the encrypted cipher key sent from the PC into a nonvolatile RAM. The password input by the user is received, and the image databased on an image read from an original are generated when a user's instruction is received. The encrypted cipher key is decoded by utilizing the password input by the scanner, and the decoded cipher key is utilized to generate and send encrypted data.
