<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader capable of preventing wrinkles and clogging of document from occurring, easily usable by the user, and capable of performing a slide-under discharge of paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This document reader 1 capable of discharging the following documents in such a manner that the following documents are slid in order under the discharged documents includes a supply tray 10 for placing the documents thereon, a discharge tray 20 to which the documents are discharged, a conveying mechanism for conveying the documents from the supply tray 10 to the discharge tray 20 via a reading position R, a discharged paper detection sensor 23 for detecting the document discharged to the discharge tray 20, and a control unit 4 for controlling a document reading operation by controlling the driving of the conveying mechanism. When a reading start instruction is input into the control unit, the control unit 4 start the document reading operation when the documents are determined to be absent on the discharge tray 20 by the detection of the discharged paper detection sensor 23, and when the documents are determined to be present on the discharge tray 20, does not start the document reading operation.
