PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the recognition rate of magnetic ink characters, and increase processing speed. SOLUTION: The magnetic ink character reader is provided with: a magnetic data acquiring means for acquiring magnetic data included in the magnetic ink characters printed in a document; a magnetic character recognizing part for recognizing the magnetic ink characters from the magnetic data; an optical character reading part for optically reading the magnetic ink characters, and acquiring image data; and an optical character recognizing part for recognizing the magnetic ink characters from the image data. The optical character recognizing part recognizes the magnetic ink characters on the basis of recognition candidate characters obtained by the magnetic character recognizing part.
